Homework for May 17

It should go without saying that your final project is due next Friday. Each group must have a printed copy of their finished product in class on Friday to be graded on the project.

You should also coordinate a time for your group to meet and examine the final product before class. This will be necessary for the final post assignment! Here’s what you will need to do:

Assess the final product. How does it look? Did the colors print as expected? Are there any pages or areas where the color is muted or compromised? Have you lost any important edges – or discovered any new white spaces – in your margins or bleeds? Are the thickness and weights of the paper what you anticipated? What about the overall design and planning of the book? Are you pleased with the way that your group worked together? Were there any shortcomings or disappointments in the group dynamic? How would you describe your role in the process? If you could change anything about the final outcome what would it be? If you had to start this process all over, what would you do differently? What worked best? What parts of your project are you most happy with?

This post should be 3-4 really strong paragraphs.

Homework for May 10

Once again, your primary goal for next week is to work on completing your final project. By the start of our next class, you should have a digital file that is ready for press. (And you should be familiar enough with your printer’s turnaround time to know exactly when you’ll need to submit your files.)

We’ll spend the majority of next class discussing the digital files for your projects, and identifying any potential issues or concerns. To facilitate this discussion, there are two things that your group (you do not have to do these individually) will be responsible for submitting:

1. A PDF of your final project. Please post this to the website in page order (not printer spreads).

2. An updated project brief. Please address the following points, and post the revised brief as a PDF. Every member of your group should be able to answer any of these questions during next week’s discussion.

Homework for May 3

Continue working on your final project!!!

It’s now officially crunch time. You have about two weeks left to complete a fantastic project. At this point you should have a very clear idea of what is required to do this. You should also have a very clear idea of what you need to send to the printer, and when you need to send it.

The next two weeks will fly by. Make sure that you are on top of this project.

(Please also make sure you are caught up on any past assignments.)

Homework for April 26

I know that we are just starting the final project, but we already need to think about the finished product. The capabilities and limitations of the printing facility that you plan to use will have a major impact on the way that you design your work.

For next week, each member of your group should research a different printing facility. Try to fill in each of the following fields, and consider whether or not the facility you choose is a reasonable option for your group. The goal is to have 3 or 4 different options, so you can make an informed decision.

Homework for April 19

Everybody did great work on their second projects. Our goal for next week is to consider the achievements and flaws of this project, and to start thinking about how those things will translate to your final.

For next class, write a 3-4 paragraph post offering some initial thoughts on your final project. Some questions you may want to consider are: What were the strongest aspects of your groups project? What were the weakest? What was your contribution to the process? Is there anything that you would do differently next time? Did you have any ideas that you wanted to use but were unable to? Did any of the other projects give you new ideas? Do you have any initial thoughts or suggestions for your new group’s project?

Look at the parameters for the final project and try to brainstorm some ideas for next week. And feel free to include reference images.

ALSO: Please take a few minutes before class next week to read the posts from other members of your group. A general idea of each other’s ideas will be extremely helpful for mapping out your project.

Homework for April 10 and 12!

There are two things to do for next week:

1. Finish your second project. Again, this is top priority. And you will notice that you have a slightly different deadline than usual. I will be delivering your PDF files to Remsen Graphics for printing. This means we will need to anticipate their turnaround time in our workflow. If you would like me to manage the printing (and cover the cost!) your file must be posted by 1:00 in the afternoon on Wednesday, April 10. You can attach to a blog post as per usual.

If your PDF is not submitted by 1:00 on Wednesday, you will be responsible for printing 3 copies on your own. (It is absolutely necessary that you have hard copies in class next Friday!)

2. Create a new post outlining your group’s project. You can use the design brief format or write a few paragraphs – whichever you find easiest to convey your ideas, approach, and color scheme.

(As of Friday, April 5, there are only a couple of posts regarding this project. If you have posted, you do not need to complete part 2 for April 12. If you have not posted an individual comment about your project, please do so for next week.)

Reminder: Project Brief

Just a quick reminder that if you have not posted a PDF of your mid-term project brief, please do so ASAP. Again, this is your mid-term grade and counts for 10% of your total average for the class. That is an entire letter grade!

I hope that everyone is enjoying the week off (from classes at least). See you next week.

Homework for April 5

Everyone has done great work so far, and I’m sure you’re looking forward to a week without classes. I’m sorry to say it, but there is a little bit of work to do during this time. But hopefully it will be work that you enjoy doing!

The most important part of your assignment for next class is to continue working on your second project. In your work session you should have established goals and priorities for each member of your group. You should use this time to accomplish the tasks for which you are responsible. The quality of your final output will largely depend on what you complete in this time.

The second part of your assignment for next week is to provide an update on your project. Talk about the overall concept that your group has developed, along with artwork, copy, and design strategies. Mention any images, books or websites that are serving as influences. Also talk about the responsibilities that each member of your group is taking on. Talk about the things that you will need to complete for next week for this project to be successful.

Post your update to the blog as per usual. And yes (as per usual) everyone is responsible for posting this update individually.
